Course Description:
This 40-hour, POST Handgun Instructor Certification course is designed to provide law enforcement officers the necessary skill and knowledge to develop and operate a law enforcement firearms / handgun program for their agency, and or assist teaching handgun
skills in a Colorado POST academy. The course curriculum has been reviewed by Colorado POST and meets their requirements for an academy firearms instructor certification.
Requirements:
Students will be required to pass the Colorado POST Handgun Qualification Course on day one of training (two attempts). Failure to pass the qualification will result in removal from the course.
Students must be a current sworn Law Enforcement Officer.
Course Outline:
Students will learn how to develop and maintain a law enforcement firearms program, manage and operate firearms ranges, instruct handgun skills, diagnose shooting errors and make sustainable corrections in other shooters. Students will develop the ability to instruct the following:
legal and appropriate use of force decisions
weapons maintenance
fundamentals of shooting
“combat” shooting techniques
use of various positions and cover
efficient weapons manipulations
malfunction clearances
understanding wound ballistics
tactics and techniques for fighting with the handgun
extended range shooting
low light / night techniques.
Students should expect a fast paced and physically active learning environment that will include running, kneeling and quickly assuming various unique shooting positions.
Student Must Provide:
Duty Handgun w 3 magazines
Duty belt / holster
1000 rds handgun ammo
Laptop Computer (class materials will be provided via DropBox)
Hat, electronic ear protection, eye protection (both sunglasses and clear eye pro)
Flashlight
Weapons mounted light (optional)
Equipment:
Students may use handguns with either “iron sights” or electronic red dot sights for the entire course. Students may want to bring two handguns; one with iron sights and one with a red dot, but this is not required.
Instructors:
The training staff is comprised of individuals who have a wealth of experience as instructor trainers and utilizing these weapons in real world situations; from police patrol duty and police special weapons teams to military Special Operations conducted in the War on Terrorism.
