Handgun Instructor Course

This 44 hour Colorado POST approved Handgun Instructor Certification course is designed to provide law enforcement officers the necessary skill and knowledge to develop and operate a law enforcement firearms / handgun program for their agency and or assist teaching handgun skills in a police academy setting. *Students will be required to pass the Colorado POST Handgun Qualification Course on day one of training (two attempts). Failure to pass the qualification will result in removal from the course.

Students must be an current sworn Law Enforcement Officer.

Outline:

Students will learn how to develop and maintain a firearms program, manage and operate firearms ranges, instruct handgun skills, and diagnose shooting errors and make sustainable corrections in other shooters. Students will develop the ability to instruct the following:

• appropriate set up and accessories for the handgun

• weapons maintenance

• fundamentals of shooting

• “combat” shooting techniques

• use of various positions and cover

• efficient weapons manipulations

• malfunction clearances

• understanding wound ballistics

• tactics and techniques for fighting with the handgun

• extended range shooting

• low light / night techniques.

Students should expect a fast paced and physically active learning environment that will include running, kneeling and quickly assuming various unique shooting positions.

Student Must Provide:

• Duty Handgun w 3 magazines

• Duty belt / holster

• 1000 rds handgun ammo

• Ballistic vest (optional)

• Laptop Computer*

• 5 dummy rounds

• Hat, ear protection, eye protection

(both sunglasses and clear eye pro)

• Flashlight

• Weapons mounted light (optional)

*all classroom materials will be provided on a computer thumb drive. Students will need a lap top computer to view the materials

HANDGUN INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION

Instructors:

The training staff is comprised of individuals who have a wealth of experience as instructor trainers and utilizing these weapons in real world situations; from police patrol duty and police special weapons teams, to military Special Operations conducted in the War on Terrorism.

Dave Kleiber compiled a concurrent law enforcement and military career over the past 28 years; the last 11 of which were with US Army Special Forces units. He has an extensive amount of experience as an international marksmanship champion being one of only 499 Double Distinguished Marksman in the history of the United States Army. Dave has been a law enforcement firearms instructor and instructor trainer since 1999. He has been a multi-jurisdictional SWAT team commander and is a combat veteran having served with US Army Special Forces units in Operation Iraqi Freedom I and Operation Iraqi Freedom II. Dave is a Colorado POST Firearms Full Skills Instructor. He has served on the Colorado POST Firearms Subject Matter Expert Committee, has been a lead instructor for the Colorado Law Enforcement Training Academy (CLETA), and currently is a primary instructor trainer for the Colorado POST / County Sheriffs of Colorado firearms instructor certification program. Dave has been endorsed as an expert witness in firearms design and function, firearms tactics and training, use of force considerations, and human reaction to stress. Dave has provided firearms, tactics and leadership instruction to law enforcement and military members across the U.S. and around the world.

Todd Haller is a Patrol Sargent with the Snowmass Village Police Department. He is the director of a regional multi-agency law enforcement firearms training program for agencies in south central Colorado. Todd is the lead firearms instructor for the Colorado Law Enforcement Training Academy (CLETA) at Colorado Mountain College, Glenwood Springs, CO and a Colorado POST Full Skills Instructor. His firearms instructional skills and knowledge are in demand nationwide. Todd has taught basic to advanced handgun and carbine skills for Executive Security International, Safariland Shooting School, and the Action Target Law Enforcement Training Camp. When not instructing, Todd hones his skills as a national level competitive shooter.

Paul Malchow is a 23 year veteran police officer serving with the Colorado Springs Police Department. He has been a member of CSPD’s full-time SWAT team as well as their full-time range master. He is a trained sniper and has been endorsed as an expert witness in ballistics. Paul helped develop CSPD’s Designated Marksman program, which was one of the first agencies to adopt the DMR concept nationwide. Paul is in demand as a firearms trainer for the County Sheriffs of Colorado, the Pikes Peak Regional Law Enforcement Training Academy and the National Tactical Officers Association.
