HANDGUN INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION 

Course Description: 

This 44hour, Colorado POST approved, Handgun Instructor Certification course is designed to provide law enforcement officers the necessary skill and knowledge to develop and operate a law enforcement firearms/handgun program for their agency or assist teaching handgun skills in a police academy setting. 

Course Requirements: 

Students will be required to pass the Colorado POST Handgun Qualification Course on day one of training

Failure to pass the qualification will result in removal from the course. Students must be a current sworn Law Enforcement Officer

Outline: 

Students will learn how to develop and maintain a firearms program, manage and operate firearms ranges, instruct handgun skills, and diagnose shooting errors and make sustainable corrections in other shooters. 

Students will develop the ability to instruct the following: 

• diagnose and correct shooting errors 

• legal and appropriate use of force decisions 

• weapons maintenance 

• fundamentals of shooting 

• “combat” shooting techniques 

• use of various positions and cover 

• efficient weapons manipulations 

• malfunction clearances 

• understanding wound ballistics 

• tactics and techniques for fighting with the handgun 

• extended range shooting 

• low light / night techniques. 

Students should expect a fast paced and physically active learning environment that will include running, kneeling and quickly assuming various unique shooting positions. 

Student Must Provide: 

•Duty handgun w 3 magazines 

•Duty belt / holster 

•1000 rds handgun ammo 

•Ballistic vest (optional) 

•Laptop Computer 

• 5 dummy rounds 

• Hat, ear protection, eye protection (both sunglasses and clear eye pro) 

• Flashlight 

• Weapons mounted light (optional) 

Instructors: 

The training staff is comprised of individuals who have a wealth of experience as instructor trainers and utilizing these weapons in real world situations; from police patrol duty and police special weapons teams, to military Special Operations conducted in the War on Terrorism. 

Covid 19 Precautions: 

Safety measures such as the use of facial masks, hand sanitizers and social distancing, that have been approved by Colorado POST for skills training in the Colorado Law Enforcement Training Academies will be enforced.
